UK car production was the worst for May since 1946 as plants either remained closed or restarting at reduced capacity, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, or SMMT, reported Friday. Car manufacturing output declined 95.4 percent from last year in May. Only 5,314 vehicles rolled off production lines. A report released by the Commerce Department on Thursday showed the slump in U.S. economic activity in the first quarter was unrevised from the previous estimate. After reporting a sharp drop in new orders for U.S. manufactured durable goods in the previous month, the Commerce Department released a report on Thursday showing a substantial rebound in durable goods orders in the month of May. First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits fell by much less than expected in the week ended June 20th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday.
